Night Café RELEASED:
9th September 2013 Third single from 'English Electric'
Though not generally seen as the most popular choice for English Electric's third single ('Helen of Troy' was preferred by many), Night Café's cleverly offhand lyrics ('I'm unaware of what you say, and I/ Really don't care anyway') and incredibly catchy synth line make it typically OMD.
The final version, however, was reportedly completely different to Andy McCluskey's original idea for the song; in a recent interview he discussed initially writing the song alone, but decided it needed 'something else' to make it good enough for the album, which eventually came in the form of a synth line that Paul Humphrey's had written. McCluskey then to had to rearrange most of the track, stripping back the drum and bass parts to 'make room' for 'richness' of the synth part Humphreys had written.
In terms of format, it's primary release was as a limited edition ten track CD 'single', with the other tracks comprising of four separate remixes of the title song (including one by OMD's most recent European support band Vile Electrodes) along with a collection of B-sides including never-before-released 'Kill Me'.
